Beth Qaṭraye, Syriac for “region of the Qataris,” is a term found in Syriac literature referring to the region of north-eastern Arabia, including modern-day Qatar and Bahrain, from the fourth to the ninth centuries. This volume presents and analyzes information on the pre-Islamic and early Islamic historical geography and toponyms of the Beth Qaṭraye region as well as newly discovered vocabulary from a language referred to as Qaṭrāyīth (“in Qatari”) used by its inhabitants.

The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali by Abū Rayḥān al-Bīrūnī; edited and translated by Mario Kozah

This book is a new edition and translation into English of the Arabic translation and commentary on this text by the brilliant eleventh-century polymath al-Bīrūnī. Given the many historical variants of the Yoga Sutras, his Kitāb Bātanjali is important for yoga studies as the earliest translation of the Sanskrit text. It is also of unique value as an Arabic text within Islamic studies, given the intellectual and philosophical challenges that faced the medieval Muslim reader when presented with the intricacy of composition, interpretation, and allusion that permeates this translation.

The reissue of Duval's edition of Bar Bahlul's lexicon is part of a larger project that aims at producing resources for the study of Syriac, Aramaic and Arabic lexical and toponymical data of Beth Qaraye based on historical, archaeological and lexicographical evidence. The project provides an XML tagged version of the Bar Bahlul corpus. This release differs from earlier reprints in that Duval's rich introductory material is translated into English by Samuel Barry, the Dr. Khalid and Mrs. Amira Dinno Fellow in Digital Humanities at Beth Mardutho for 2018.
