EndNote 20

This guide provides basic information on using EndNote Desktop (citation management tool)
Importing PDF Files

You can create references by importing PDF files into your EndNote library.

What happens when you import PDF files into EndNote?

The references for these PDFs appear in your EndNote Library. EndNote will create a record for each PDF and attach a copy of the PDF to the record. This works best when your PDF has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier).

If the PDF is scanned or if it does NOT have a DOI ► In such cases the reference will only contain the PDF, and you will need to use the Find Reference Updates function in EndNote to create a new entry or to fill out the fields manually

Follow instruction on How to

  • Open your EndNote Library
  • From the File menu, select Import
  • Choose File
  • In the Import File popup window
    • Click on Choose to locate the PDF you want to import
    • In Import Option, select the PDF option
    • Click on Import

  • Open your EndNote Library
  • From the File menu, select Import
  • Choose Folder
  • In the Import Folder popup window
    • Click on Choose to select the required folder. If your folder contains subfolders check the Include files in sub-folders box to include these files in the import.
    • In Import Option, select the PDF option
    • Click on Import

If the imported PDF is scanned or does NOT have a DOI ► NO entry will be created in your EndNote library. You can use the Find Reference Updates function to create the entry.

  • Select the empty entry to display the PDF file
  • Go to Edit tab and select the Reference Type e.g. Journal Article. Use the information in the PDF file to fill-up Author, Title and Year fields
  • From the References menu, select Find Reference Updates. EndNote will automatically search for the reference and If information found, return with a box containing that information
  • Select Update All Fields
