It is very important to choose the appropriate format for your data, this will affect its reusability in the future. To ensure long term accessibility one should consider using:
1- Nonproprietary formats. Those are formats supported by more that one developer and can be accessed with different softwares. i.e. xml format.
2- Widely adopted and supported formats.
3- Formats with lossless data compression such as TIFF for images.
