This guide provides links to helpful resources for online teaching and learning and will be updated frequently.
Tips for Using Videos in Teaching

For best fair use, consider doing the following:

  • Link to the video, in Moodle, if possible rather than making an electronic copy available to students. 
  • If you have your own video files best practice is to upload these to Google Drive, or One Drive and link over to the content in Moodle.
  • If copying a video, do not use any more of the video than the amount needed to serve your purpose.
  • Place the video in the context of the course.
  • Limit access to the video to students enrolled in the course.
  • Use streaming or other technologies that limit students' ability to download, copy, or redistribute the material.
  • Notify students that videos are being made available for teaching, study, and research only.
  • Provide attributions to known copyright owners of the videos.

Embedding Video Clips in your Class

Video clips can be embedded into the Moodle LMS or shared with students on when you are teaching in Zoom or Webex in live  or asynchronous instruction.

Video clips can be created and shared in a number of ways:

  • Create a link to a clip from the Library database,  SAGE Research Methods Video
  • Submit a request to the Library to create clips from a DVD in the collection that will be posted on the library server for a limited amount of time.
  • Create your own clips and post them to Moodle, or another clip sharing platform.

Copyright

The 2012 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) exemptions permit faculty and students to circumvent protection measures to make short portions available for viewing. The circumvention is allowed "only when necessary". If very high quality copy is not required, the law permits the use of screen capture software such as Camtasia, Jing, to copy portions of the video. Finding  Videos in the Library

Digital video are available from a variety of the library e-Resources, they can be added or linked to Moodle.

Start by searching SearchAll for your topic and limit your search results to online videos following below instructions:

In the search results page Refine Your Search to “Full-Text Online” and Content Type to "Streaming Video" to discover the streaming video available from the library collections. Copy the Permalink and share it with your students.

 

Open Access Videos

Using YouTube video in classes?

 It is acceptable to link to YouTube videos in a learning management system. There are many YouTube videos (and other videos) available through CC licenses as well. The best way to use a YouTube video is to link to it. Using YouTube's embedded code for linking is fine also; When you click Share, YouTube makes the code available for users to embed.

Digitizing DVDs from the Library

Library staff can assist you locate streaming videos, including converting library-owned DVDs into a temporary digital version you can link to Moodle. Please fill out this form to begin the process. We may be able to purchase titles that we do not currently own, please fill the Suggest a New Title form.

If you only need short clips from a video you may be able to use screen capture software like Camtasia to do so.
