Online Teaching Support: Course Readings

In Case you are not using Moodle

In case you are not using Moodle, The University Libraries will help you find your course readings and make them available to students.

• Use the Course Reserves Request Form to ask the library to place book chapters, articles, or other materials on e-reserves for your class.
• E-reserves are posted and made accessible from the Library Catalog on the Library webpage under the course number.

Copyright Tips

• All course readings must meet copyright or have the permission of the copyright holder for this type of use.
• Readings and/or viewings must be restricted to members of the class.
• Access must be terminated at the end of final exams.
• Reproduced (scanned or photocopied) materials should include proper attribution and include the original work's copyright statement.
• If no statement can be found, a standard statement of copyright protection may be use

Consider fair use when posting materials. A single copy can be made of any of the following for scholarly and research use:

• ​A chapter of a book or 10% of a book.
• One complete article from a journal issue.
• Maximum 10 pages from a poem, short story, short literary work taken from a volume of short stories.
• Up to 10% (max. 20 pages) per short book (without chapters), reports, pamphlet or standard specification.
• One separate illustration, a chart, diagram, drawing, cartoon, photograph or map up to A4 size

You can link to course reserve items in Moodle if they are available through the Library's licensed databases, or if they are open-access resources. You have two options:

1. Send the list to your subject librarian

The Librarian will help you find the items for your course reading list and will provide you with the links  for online access or assist you in digitizing the print version.

2. Or Do It Yourself

Instructors are encouraged to identify course-related readings through SearchAll box on the main Library webpage. Use the facet "Full-Text online" to limit results to materials available online.

Capturing the "permalink" for any title of interest as a course reading is the best way for students to connect to this content.

If there is a small portion (a chapter or so) of a print item that you need the library may be able to digitize this for you. Please send the details by email to libreserve@aub.edu.lb

If a book you wish to add to your syllabus is currently only available to you in print, the library may be able to purchase an e-book version.  Use online book purchase request, or contact your Subject Librarian for assistance finding appropriate online resources.
