Cataloging and Metadata Services Department

Here are listed tasks that can be undertaken by interns at the Cataloging and Metadata Services Department. Please note that interns can select one of the listed modules for a semester long internship.

Orientation

The intern will have an orientation tour with the Head of the Department and have an overview of the work done at the Department using international rules and local procedures of processing.

A mentor is assigned to the intern who will be responsible for guiding the latter and following up on his/her work

The outcome of cataloging and metadata creation is very essential for describing digital and digitized materials in Digital Humanities projects.

The intern should meet with the head of the Department on a weekly basis to check the progress and the difficulties that might be faced.

CATALOGING AND METADATA CREATION

The Head of the Department assigns to the intern a number of library materials (like books, periodicals, maps, audiovisuals, photos, theses, etc..) to process them by filling MARC records in the library system. The records of these materials, created by the intern, will be exported, mapped, and converted into metadata in Dublin Core format, to be populated in Content Management System (CMS) or digital repository to describe the born digital or the digitized materials.

The student should have at least 50 records covering all library material types.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn cataloging rules and Bibliographic MARC format.
  • Learn briefly Classification using Dewey Decimal Classification.
  • Learn how to enter the metadata that describes the library materials into the library system.
  • Learn how to export the Marc records from the library system to an excel sheet mapped to Dublin Core schema.
  • Learn how to prepare the metadata to be imported to an open-source Content Management System (CMS).

The intern will have an overview of the work to be done with local procedures of processing using open sources tools. A mentor will be assigned to the intern for guidance.

The mentor assigns a number of digitized periodical issues and articles to be processed by filling excel sheet of the mapped metadata in Dublin Core. The intern will create an account in OMEKA Content Management System (CMS) to import the metadata.
