Why Data Management?

Well managed data will allow:

1- Verification of published research results.

2- Reduction of scientific fraud.

3- Promotion of new research.

4- Reduction of redundancy in research.

 

Data Management Plan Content

  1. Description of the Data : Type, format and volume.
  2. Storage implications
  3. Description of the data collection method.
  4. Discuss quality insurance protocols
  5. Describe the needed documentation that will help in interpreting and using the data.
  6. Describe provisions for protecting confidentiality.
  7. Manage Copyrights
  8. Identify the repository
  9. Document the data
  10. Describe how others might find your data
  11. Explain how to cite your data
  12. Discuss privacy concerns
  13. Identify who will oversee the implementation of data management plan.
  14. Consider long term preservation-costs

Funding Agencies Requirements

NSF-Requirements

“Proposals …. must include a supplementary document of no more than 2 pages labeled “Data Management Plan””        (NSF, 2010)

NIH requirements

“…investigators submitting an NUH application seeking $500,000 or more in direct costs in any single year are expected to include a “plan for data sharing” or state why sharing is impossible.” (NIH, 2003) 

NEH requirements

What data are generated by your research? What is your plan for managing the data? (NEH, 2015).
