Copyright and Permissions: Advocacy

Welcome! This guide provides information and resources on copyright law in Lebanon and internationally. The guide emphasizes on how copyright law relates to academic activities such as research, teaching, and publishing.

Copyright Reform

Several countries at the WIPO - Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR), are trying to push forward the discussions towards a legally-binding instrument in the field of educational exceptions. IFLAEIFL and LCA are working with WIPO Member States to gain support for a binding international instrument on copyright limitations and exceptions to enable libraries to preserve their collections, support education and research, and lend materials.

Advocate Organizations for Copyright Reform

EIFL program: Copyright and Libraries Program advocates for national and international copyright law reform, and supports librarians to become advocates for a fair copyright system.

IFLA Copyright and other Legal Matters (CLM) Advisory Committee
CLM strongly advocates at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Geneva, for a minimum international standard of exceptions and limitations to copyright, alongside partner organisations. More information on the outcomes of the last Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) at WIPO can be found here.

Library Copyright Alliance (LCA)
(LCA) consists of three major library associations — the American Library Association, the Association of Research Libraries, and the Association of College and Research Libraries.

Communia
Advocates for policies that expand the public domain and increase access to and reuse of culture and knowledge. We seek to limit the scope of exclusive copyright to sensible proportions that do not place unnecessary restrictions on access and use.

Authors Alliance
The mission of Authors Alliance is to further the public interest in facilitating widespread access to works of authorship by assisting and representing authors who want to disseminate knowledge and products of the imagination broadly
